Supposing That I Write it in a Note Tonight
[You've found a small stack of short letters hidden in Qing's room! They appear to be written to bygone friends and shipmates.]
[Date unknown, probably mid-late March]
Mal,
It's been a while since you were here. I wasn't sure, at first, that it would bother me - between Jojo and everyone else, not much really changed. He became captain - I figure you would have approved. We got some new upgrades to the ship, and some noisy people have come and gone. You'd have liked them, I think. Jojo's boyfriend joined us, too.
[April 19th(?)]
Mal,
I'm not sure why I'm writing these. Not a whole lot has changed in the last month... the ship's as noisy as ever. It's not quite the same, though, since no one's really pushing us to compete against one another or do anything weird. I guess that means I miss you, even if what you did was sometimes awkward and uncomfortable.
I guess that's kind of what family does, isn't it?
[April 28th]
Mal,
Jojo disappeared the other day. It's funny, I didn't think we'd lose both of you for some reason. I know that was illogical, but still. It feels a lot quieter here without you guys, even though it's not. We got a pink pony - her name is Pinkie, you'd like her a lot - on the ship. She's a good person--er, pony--but I feel a little lost. Daenerys is captain now, I think she'll do well. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders.
[May 4th]
Jojo,
I became First Mate today. It's surreal. I mean, it's not like it means anything, but just having the position reminds me that you're not here anymore. I keep going into the cockpit expecting to see you sleeping there - silly, I know. Caesar went home when you did, so it's been... different. Not quiet, because you left and a very noisy pink pony joined us, but different.
Maybe I'm a little disappointed that we're turning a little more serious. It really makes it feel like you guys are gone for good.
[May 4th]
Mal,
I wonder if you'd be proud, knowing I became First Mate. We've lost pretty much everyone who was here when you were, but there are still a lot of us. It's not too quiet, but there's still none of the weird tension and frustrated bemusement that was there when you were captain. I still spend most of my time reading and making clothes, so you'd probably yell at me to do something more social.
We got to a new planet recently, with a poisonous atmosphere and a lot of fighting. There was also a masquerade ball... I ended up going, even though I didn't know what to really do there. Actually, all that happened a few weeks ago - I must have forgotten to write about them. I feel like you would have dragged us all down there to have some bonding exercise or another, though.
I wonder if you would have gone to the ball. It would have been fun to help make you a costume...
